What is DBT?

DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy. It was originally designed to treat people with chronic suicidal thinking and other behaviors that disrupt their lives. Today at Aucoin & Associates, we know that it can be used across different clinical settings for a variety of problems. The skills taught along with the DBT approach can be used proactively to maintain a balanced, healthy life.

What does DBT skills group look like?

The DBT Skills Group in Lafayette, LA, is not a typical processing group, nor is it talk therapy. This group is designed with a classroom setting in mind, with each meeting structured to teach and practice skills in a group setting. The group is led by a DBT-informed clinician in Lafayette, Louisiana, who educates and models the skills being taught each week. For example, the group would begin with a mindfulness exercise which would then be followed with a review of the previous week’s homework and diary card entry. From there, the group would begin the current week’s lesson. No prior knowledge is required for attendance – we only require an open mind and the willingness to try something new.
